The purpose of this programme gives individuals the training to operate a battery-operated defined purpose lift truck. They can access emergency support and services in the case of an emergency while operating a lift truck. The person is also able to identify and classify the load, handle and move the freight while operating the lifting equipment per standards and its performance capabilities. They are also able to monitor the fitness of the lift truck.
The qualifying learner is capable of:
- Applying the recognised methods for inspecting and recording the operational fitness of all components of the lift truck with reference to safety procedures in the workplace.
- Identifying and classifying freight/loads taking into account documentation, packaging and labelling associated with the specific freight.
- Handling, loading and storing freight in accordance with industry standards environmental requirements, and with due consideration to inter alia the commodities and their properties, storage area and placement of load.
- Achieving maximum work performance of lifting equipment and attachments, by applying knowledge of equipment dimensions, controls, principles of operation and capacities, manufacturing specifications and circumstances in the working environment.
- Operating equipment in accordance with laid down organisational and legislative standards and procedures as well as manufacturer’s guidelines.
- Accessing available emergency support system and services in case of incidents and accidents.
This course introduces learners to the essential skills and knowledge required for the safe and efficient operation of lift trucks. Participants will learn to apply recognised methods for inspecting and recording the operational fitness of lift truck components, with a strong focus on workplace safety procedures. The course covers the identification and classification of freight, including documentation, packaging, and labelling, as well as the handling, loading, and storage of freight in line with industry standards and environmental considerations. Learners will also gain a deep understanding of maximising the performance of lifting equipment by applying knowledge of equipment dimensions, controls, and principles of operation. Operating equipment in accordance with organisational, legislative, and manufacturer guidelines, as well as accessing emergency support systems in the event of accidents or incidents, are key components of this course.

During the workshop, participants will be briefed on how to prepare and present a Portfolio of Evidence of practical assessment.
After attendance of the course and successful completion of both formative and summative assessments, the learner will be issued with a Certificate of Competence. This unit standard is SETA-accredited and internationally recognised.
