This unit standard is to enable the first responder to react to emergencies at an advanced first aid level, until the arrival of more professional emergency personnel.
Qualifying learners are able to:
- Explaining the principles of advanced first aid in emergencies
- Demonstrating an advanced level of preparedness to deal with sudden illness or emergency
- Assessing and managing an emergency scene/disaster
- Describing the anatomy and explaining the physiology of the human body systems in terms of injury or sudden illness
- Applying primary first aid for all age groups according to accepted current first aid protocols
- Explaining and managing shock
This course is designed to equip first responders with the skills needed to react to emergencies at an advanced first aid level, ensuring effective assistance until professional emergency personnel arrive. By completing this unit, learners will be able to explain the principles of advanced first aid, demonstrate preparedness for sudden illness or emergencies, and assess and manage emergency or disaster scenes. The course also covers human anatomy and physiology in relation to injuries or sudden illnesses, the application of primary first aid across all age groups following current protocols, and the understanding and management of shock.

During the workshop, participants will be briefed on how to prepare and present a Portfolio of Evidence for assessment.
After attendance of the course and successful completion of both formative and summative assessments, the learner will be issued with a Certificate of Competence. This unit standard is SETA accredited and internationally recognised.
